Raising Awareness: Protecting Our Young People from Alcohol and Drug Abuse – (26/09/26)

MAC and GOPIO, in collaboration with the Multicultural Hub, hosted an eye-opening and interactive session on alcohol and drug abuse among young people.

We sincerely thank Zakia Patel, Director of the Multicultural Hub, for facilitating and organising this informative session at such short notice.

The session highlighted an important question: How can we, as parents, grandparents, and community members, help protect our young people?

How Can We Make a Difference?

Parents and grandparents are among the strongest protective influences in a young person’s life. We can help by:

  • Being positive role models: Demonstrate healthy ways to manage stress and life’s challenges.
  • Building trust and connection: Encourage open, non-judgmental conversations and spend quality time together.
  • Setting clear boundaries: Discuss expectations around alcohol, vaping, and other substances.
  • Staying involved: Take an interest in their friendships, activities, and social circles while building connections with other parents.

Protecting our young people is a shared responsibility. Through awareness, communication, and strong family relationships, we can help them make safer and healthier choices.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Zakia Patel for making this valuable session possible, to all participants for their attendance, and to Sahiti, President of FINACT, for joining us in support of this important initiative.

The session concluded with a delicious lunch thoughtfully organised by Zakia, providing an opportunity for everyone to connect and strengthen community bonds.

Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more supportive future for our young people.
